William Booth Was Committed to Serving the Poor

William Booth, a young British evangelist, saw the desperation of his fellow Londoners. He saw people struggling with poverty, depression, and emptiness. William and his wife Catherine stepped boldly into the place of the broken and hurting, defying the orders of church leadership, and began ministering to the destitute. Unafraid, William Booth preached the Gospel and saw one weary soul after another turn toward the Lord. Lives were changed, and families were restored. The band of believers became known as the Salvation Army. Today, the Salvation Army is known for housing orphans, healing the sick, teaching classes, providing clothing and other needed items to the poor, and much more.
